Summer Safety for Kids

Summer is a great time for kids to run around outside and enjoy the fresh air.  As a parent, you encourage your kids to get lots of activity, but you want them to stay safe too. Use these tips from the Federal Citizen Information Center to make sure your kids have a safe and fun summer.

  • Brush up on your first aid. Bumps, bruises and scrapes are all pretty minor and common injuries kids can get when they’re playing outside. Learn the best way to handle minor accidents with a first aid refresher course. Find one near you so you’ll be prepared if an accident does happen. And learn how to identify the symptoms of more serious injuries like sprains and broken bones so you can begin treating them right away. The sooner you catch an injury and let it heal, the sooner your kids can be back outside enjoying summer.
  • Teach your kids what poison ivy looks like. You don’t want your kids to have a run-in with any kind of poison while they’re outside playing this summer. Use the guide from MedlinePlus to help your kids identify what the plants look like. If they do brush up against a poisonous plant, the guide has tips on treatment.
  • Keep an eye on the temperature. Sometimes summer temperatures can get so high that it’s unsafe to go outside. To help you stay cooler, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends avoiding sugary drinks, which can dehydrate you, and taking a cool shower or bath if you feel yourself start to overheat. If you must go outside, the CDC offers tips on staying safe.

With these preventative tips from the Federal Citizen Information Center, you can rest easy knowing you’re prepared no matter what your kids get into this summer.
